Marwari sheep are distributed in Jodhpur, Jalore, Nagaur, Pali and Barmer districts extending up to Ajmer and Udaipur districts of Rajasthan and the Jeoria region of Gujarat. The main utility of this breed is mutton and carpet wool. The animals are medium size with black face, the colour extending to the lower part of neck. Ears are extremely small and tubular. The average body weight for adult male is 30.66 kg and for adult female, it is 26.11 kg.
This breed is distributed in Muzzafanagar, Bulandshaher, Saharanpur, Meerut, Bijnor and Dehradun districts of Uttar Pradesh and parts of Delhi and Haryana. Pure specimens are found in Muzzafarnagar district. The main utility of this breed is mutton and carpet wool. The average body weight for adult male is 50.21 kg and for adult female is 39.61 kg.
The Deccani breed of sheep is widely distributed in the Deccan plateau across the Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It has 5 different strains, viz Sangamneri (picture above), Solapuri, Lonad, Kolhapuri, Madgyal, Deccani has the great potential for mutton production under intensive system of management. The breed has a thin neck, narrow chest, prominent spinal processes. The Sangamneri strain has white fleece, body has reddish, tan to black colour. Kolhapuri strain is complete black in colour with highly coarse wool. The average body weight for adult male is 38.48 kg and for adult female is 31.26 kg.
The Nellore breed of sheep is widely distributed in Nellore, Ongole and Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. Nellore is used mainly for the mutton production. Sheep is of red or white colour with or without black colour on the ventral side. Three colour types: Nellore Jodipi or Jodimpu (black and white), Nellore Dora (Brown) and Nellore Palla (white) are differentiated according to the colour. The average body weight for adult male is 36.69 kg and for adult female is 30 kg.
Distributed in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvellore, Villupuram and adjoining areas of Vellore, Cuddalore and Thiruvannamalai districts of Tamil Nadu. Medium-sized animals. This breed is reared for meat purpose. This breed is main source of livelihood for farmers of this area because of increased demand of meat. Similarly, it can be reared only on grazing. The average body weight for adult male is 26.33 kg and for adult female is 23.23 kg.
Magra sheep is distributed in Bikaner, Nagaur, Jaisalmer and Churu districts of Rajasthan. White face with light brown patches around the eyes is characteristic of this breed. This breed is mainly reared for the carpet wool and mutton purpose. The average body weight for adult male is 36.8 kg and for adult female is 30.4 kg.
